  1. Interesting to note that weekly spelling tests are considered 'of very little value' when both of my children have been subjected to them since grade 1. Maybe its time for a change?

  2. First off, my name is Shannon Shaw. I tried doing this through Google and it just kept coming up as Anonymous.

I completely DISAGREE that spelling is of very little value. When you get out into the real world trying to find a real job, ANYTHING you write will be criticized for spelling mistakes. If you mispell a number of words, you will be passed over for things, whether it be a job or a proposal. If your spelling is not up to snuff, you will be looked at as an idiot or one not willing to take the time and effort to pay attention to details. Even with spell check, you still need to know the correct word out of the list of possible spellings. I think they should put MORE emphasis on spelling rather than less!

  4. I agree as well, Shannon. Like it or not - on first blush, the level at which one communicates indicates to others one's level of intelligence. Just as we observe that 2+2=4, so should we maintain that words be spelled to a benchmarked standard.
